Black Barn ‘R&D’ Hawke’s Bay Viognier ‘Sur Lie’ 2015

Viognier from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 01-Apr-2017
Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, paler edged. The nose is elegantly proportioned with good aroma intensity, showing exotic yellow stonefruits, apricot and citrus blossom, melded harmoniously with a layering of creamy, spicy barrel-ferment and nutty lees elements. The nose has fragrance and presence. Dry to taste and full-bodied, the palate is rich and full-flavoured with spiced apricots, yellow florals, blossom, and layers of creamy oak, nutty lees. The palate has depth, intensity and excellent power and drive, the core flowing smoothly along a fine phenolic-threaded line, leading to a long, spicy, nutty finish. This is a rich, full and intense stonefruit and blossom flavoured Viognier with spicy oak and nutty lees complexities on a powerful, sustained palate. Match with rich Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4 years. Fruit selectively hand-picked from the company’s Havelock Hills site, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented in a new 500 L Saury puncheon to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 20 on lees in oak, undergoing batonnage and MLF. Sulphur addition just over 50 ppm, and bottled without fining or filtration. 562 bottles made. 18.5-/20 Apr 2017 RRP $39.00
