Black Barn Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 04-Aug-2014
Very full, deep, black-hued purple-ruby colour, near impenetrable, The nose is elegant with aromas of ripe black berry fruit with black pepper and spices, lifted by violet florals and a suggestion of bacon-like toasty oak. With aeration, complexing game and reductive nuances emerge. Medium-bodied and elegantly proportioned, an array of detailed flavours of black fruits, pepper, spices and florals feature on the palate. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained tannin extraction, forming a firm core, with fresh, lively acidity providing excellent vibrancy. The mouthfeel is supple, but possesses real drive, mouthfilling presence and a firm line, the wine flowing to a long, succulently rich-fruited, spicy finish. This is an elegant, fine-grained Syrah with rich and detailed fruit flavours. Serve with wild duck, pork, lamb and venison over the next 5-6 years. Fruit from two Havelock Hills sites, destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 18-26 days on skins and aged 10 months in 15% new French oak. 550 dozen made. 18.0+/20 Aug 2014 RRP $34.90
