Moderately deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues. This has a soft, full bouquet of aromatic dark red berry fruits with gentle black and brown spices and subtle pepper notes all harmoniously interwoven and ethereally lifted with waves of fragrances. Medium-bodied, very pronounced flavours of black berry fruits, spicy plums, liquorice and black pepper unfold and fill the palate. The acidity is a little elevated, adding real tension and poise. Smooth, supple, fine-grained tannins underline the fruit which unfolds, revealing violets florals, Asian spices and a touch of oak. The flavours flow seamlessly to a very long, spice-nuanced finish. This is an aromatic, spicy and lively Syrah to serve with Middle Eastern fare and slow-cooked lamb dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked Havelock Hills fruit from nearby sites managed by Black Barn, destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 7 months in 15% new French oak. 18.0/20 Oct 2012 RRP $32.90
