Bright, light straw-yellow colour, the nose is tight with yellow floral, apricot and stonefruit kernel aromas, along with steely minerals and a little flinty reduction that dissipates. Dry, crisp, sleek and steely, this has crisp and tight stonefruit flavours with floral and minerally nuances, underlined by slippery acidity. The palate is very smooth and finely textured, with some alcohol heat showing on the finish. Attractive lifted apricot and floral nuances unfold. A tight and youthful wine, that will match seafood dishes over the next 2-3+ years. This is the first release of a Viognier from Black Barn, fruit sourced from Chris Parker's vineyard in the Patutahi region of Gisborne 50% barrel-fermented to 14.5% alc. with 9 months maturation in barrel, of which 50% was new, this undergoing MLF. Less than 100 cases made. The wine is still tight and youthful, and will match seafood dishes over the next 2-3+ years. 17.5+/20 Sep 2011 RRP $32.90
