Black Barn ‘Barrel Fermented’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 04-Aug-2014
Bright straw-yellow colour with green-golden hues, lighter edged. The nose is full and open with lifted aromas of rich and ripe yellow stonefruits, citrus fruits and tropical fruits entwined with creamy barrel ferment and nutty oak notes. The aromatics are fresh and youthful, and still very primary. Medium-full bodied, rich and sweetly mouthfilling flavours of ripe stonefruits and citrus fruits gently flow across the palate. The mouthfeel is soft with a creamy texture from the barrel-ferment and MLF, but follows a fine and tight linear core with piquant acid energy providing excellent freshness and tension. The wine carries smoothly to a fine, dry finish with nuances of citrus, nuts and toast. This is a soft-textured, creamy Chardonnay with subtle richness. Match with seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit, clones Mendoza, 6, 15 and 95 from the Tuki Tuki Valley and Havelock Hills from vines 5-18 y.o., WBP and indigenous yeast fermented in barrel to 13.3% alc., the wine undergoing batonnage and 50% MLF, and aged 10 months in 30% new French oak. 550 dozen made. 18.5/20 Aug 2014 RRP $34.90
