Bell Bird Bay ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Apr-2014
Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is full with soft, ripe, primary aromas of dark raspberry fruit with black pepper, lifted by violet florals and some jam and confectionary notes indicating whole berry fermentation. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of ripe raspberries, black and white pepper, liquorice and jam are initially restrained, but blossom and build in depth. Some background acidity enhances the aromatic expression. The mouthfeel is robust with firm, drying tannins enveloping the fruit. This is well-textured and the extraction carries the palate line to a dry, grainy finish. This is an up-front, raspberry fruited Syrah with sweet jammy flavours and a robust, tannic mouthfeel. Match with barbecued, grilled and roasted red meat dishes over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked and machine harvested Syrah from the Bridge Pa Triangle district destemmed, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 10-14 days on skins and aged 9 months in French oak barriques. 17.0/20 Apr 2014 RRP $25.00
