Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour. Full and soft on the nose, there are aromas of green tobacco, dried herb, savoury plum and fruit cake showing, well-proportioned in presentation and with attractive harmony. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of dark plums and blackcurrants are accompanied by fresh herbs and a leafiness along with nuances of liquorice, mint chocolate and earth. This is in the cooler spectrum. The palate has firm tannins and considerable extraction, with the fresh acidity adding to the tautness and grip. Cedary oak and spices show on the moderately sustained finish. This is a firm wine with the grainy texture and crispness to match herb-marinated lamb dishes over the next 4-5 years. Merlot and Cabernet Franc from Hawke's Bay sites, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in oak. 16.5+/20 Nov 2011 RRP $24.95
