Babich ‘Winemakers’ Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay ‘Gimblett Road Vineyard’ Merlot 2015

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Jul-2016
Very full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with black hues, lighter on the rim. This has a fresh and fine nose with aromas of bright dark red berry fruit along with dark plum and redcurrant notes, revealing dark herbs and blackcurrant elements. The fruit is lively, vibrant and sweetly intense, and shows subtle nutty and spicy oak hints. Medium-bodied, the palate features fresh, vibrant, juicy and lively fruit flavours of ripe dark-red berry fruits, plums and redcurrants, entwined with spice and nutty hints. The mouthfeel is fine-textured and supple in extraction, with balanced, enlivening acidity. The wine flows with good energy to a sustained finish with dark plum and spice notes. This is a finely presented, bright and fruity Merlot with sweet plum and currant notes and some subtle spicy oak, on a supple, elegant palate. Match with roast beef, lamb and venison over the next 4-5 years. 86% Merlot and 14% Malbec from the ‘Irongate’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 25% new French oak. 18.0/20 Jul 2016 RRP $30.00
