Auburn Bannockburn Central Otago Riesling 2012

Riesling from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 10-Feb-2013
Very pale straw-lemony yellow colour. The bouquet is soft and gently broad, lush, even and full of exotic florals and hints of honey and tropical fruits. Apricotty botrytis-like (?) elements show, and the aromas have a degree of decadence and opulence in the late-harvest style. Medium-sweet to taste, soft, broad and rounded flavours of citrus, exotic florals and honey fill the mouth. The palate flows smoothly and has a rounded density and depth. Good, racy acidity underscores the palate, and the wine remains fresh and bright. This exudes richness and soft density with presence. Fermented to 11.0% alc and 34 g/L rs. 19.0+/20 Feb 2013 Bright, even, pale straw colour with slight green hues. The nose is fresh with firm, intense aromas of lime fruit, apples, minerals and wet stones, building in power, depth and volume, the aromatics classically pure in expression. Medium to sweet to taste, this is a fulsome wine on palate with solid and voluminous flavours of limes and honey, the fruit with real weight and presence, the flavours truly mouthfilling, yet extremely fine in texture. The underlying acidity balances the softness with subtle tension and the flavours flow to an open, accessible finish with floral and honeyed flavours and honied nuances that linger. A medium-sweet Riesling that is full, soft textured and gently rich, opening to show great presence and accessibility. Match with Middle Eastern and Asian fare over the next 6-8+ years. Fruit from vines established in 1998 in sandy loam soils, WBP and cool-fermented to 11.0% alc. and 34 g/L rs, with TA 8.1 g/L and pH 2.95. 870 bottles made. 19.0/20 Oct 2012 RRP $28.00
