Ataahua Waipara Merlot 2011

Merlot from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 27-Nov-2012
Very dark, deep-hearted ruby-red colour. The nose is a little shy and restrained, but reveals well-concentrated aromas of dark berry fruit, fragrant red currants with nuances of fresh herbs intertwined with liquorice and slightly resinous, cedary oak. Medium-bodied, mild, ripe flavours of plums and liquorice are underlined by fine, grainy, chalky tannins that provide a firm, dry mouthfeel. The fruit sweetness is maintained by good acidity which supports the structure and palate line which leads to a moderately sustained finish with flavours of plums, liquorice and nuances of spicy herbs. This is a medium-bodied Merlot with spicy plum flavours and a fine, firm structure to match roasted pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Fruit from the ‘Ataahua' vineyard, hand-picked and fermented to 14.1% alc., the wine aged 14 months in seasoned French oak barrels. 16.5+/20 Nov 2012 RRP $26.00
