Ash Ridge Maximus Syrah 2016, Hawke’s Bay

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-May-2023
Deep ruby-red with a slight garnet hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant and fragrant, with aromas of red berry, boysenberry and plum melded with red floral, dark herbs, spices and minerals. Full-bodied, aromas of red berry, boysenberry and plum adorned by violet, rose, dark herbs, cigar, dark minerals, spice and game. The wine is complex, with layers of flavours unveiled as it aerated, the red-fruited entry slow growing to an earthy, rich palate. Fine-grained tannins contribute to a firm yet velvety structure, reflecting dark minerals and lingering to a very long, satisfying, spiced finish. This enchanting Syrah shows complex layers with beautiful fragrant features, deep fruit, cedar and a well-structured tannin framework. Match with braised short ribs and venison over the next 8+ years. Fruit from own vineyards, co-fermented with 0.3% Viognier, aged 25 months in oak, 75% new oak. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) May 2023 RRP $100
