Ara ‘Select Blocks’ Marlborough Pinot Noir 2012

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 24-May-2014
Very dark, deep, purple hued red, the bouquet is full and robust with a mix of ripe black plum fruit , black berries, earth and iron-like notes, a touch of savoury char, all taut and tightly bound. A powerful and concentrated wine on palate, this has densely-packed flavours of black plums and spices that unfold berry fruit and floral nuances. This is somewhat restrained rather than exuberant. The tannins are tight and fine-grained, and there’s a brooding depth and the potential to bloom. The cleanliness and sense of fruit purity comes through as a feature. 18.5-/20 May 2014 RRP $29.95 Hand-picked clones 115, 777, 667, 5 and 6, from older vines, destemmed and given a cold soak, fermented with whole berries to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 10-15 days on skins and aged 10 months in 20% new French oak barrels. Very dark, deep purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is tightly concentrated with dense aromas of dark raspberry and black berry fruits, complexed by dark herbs and slight minerally reductive elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with fine-rained tannin extraction encasing the dark berry and black cherry fruit. Raspberry nuances, spicy oak and plum notes unfold with some aeration. This has good structure and grip, with balanced acidity, and good alcohol drive underlying the mouthfeel, carrying the palate to a very long and sustained finish with an amalgam of spice and reduction detail. This is a youthful, fine and firm Pinot Noir with the structure to develop over the next 6-7+ years. Serve with Mediterranean fare and semi-hard cheeses. 18.0+/20 Apr 2014 RRP $29.95
