Alluviale Gimblett Road Hawke’s Bay 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 13-Sep-2012
85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from Gimblett Road, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in French oak barriques. Very full, dark, deep, black-hued red with youthful purple hues. The nose is elegantly proportioned, but concentrated with savoury tobacco and earthy plum aromas classically Merlot, along with blackcurrant and cassis elements and a touch of sappy herbs. Medium-full bodied, the palate is dry, tending austere, showing savoury tobacco, dark plum and dried herb fruit flavours. Oaking is very discreet. The tannins are firm, forming a good linear drive and fresh acidity enlivens the fruit, carrying it through to a moderately sustained finish. This is a seriously constructed, elegantly sized Merlot-based wine with the grip to match roasts, casseroles and hard cheeses over the next 5-7 years. 700 cases made. 17.5+/20 Sep 2012 RRP $33.00
