Alexander Martinborough Merlot 2015

Merlot from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 05-Oct-2016
Full, very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly proportioned and tightly bound with aromas of ripe black berried friots along with subtle notes of black plums, entwined with graphite and pencilly oak unfolding resinous elements. Full-bodied, the palate features sweetly ripe dark-red and black berried fruits along with black plums, dark herbs and liquorice, all harmoniously interwoven with graphite and pencilly oak. The oak resin elements ate integrated with the fruit. The mouthfeel is rich, but balanced by plenty of tannin extraction, lending a firm structure. The acidity is integrated and adds to the energy. The structure carries the wine to a sustained finish with grip and flavours of black fruits. This is a rich, sweet, black-fruited Merlot with plenty of structure and grip with pencilly oak and resinous nuances on the nose. Match with lamb, beef and venison, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years. From clone 481 Merlot vines planted in 1997, fermented to14.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in one French and one American oak barrel. 47 dozen made. 17.5-/20 Oct 2016 RRP $29.00
