Abbey Cellars ‘Eden’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2012

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-Dec-2013
Very full, even, black-hued, purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full, broad, but densely packed bouquet of well-ripened black berry fruits, black pepper and spices lifted with violetty aromatics that open out in waves. Full-bodied and with a fulsome and intense mouthfeel, the fruit flavours of black berry fruits and dark plums are a little restrained. Layers of pepper, Asian spices, liquorice and oak gently unfold. The palate is broad, mouthfilling, and builds in richness, but is supported by rounded, supple, fine-grained extraction. The underlying acidity emerges and carries the flavours to a very long lingering, textured finish. This is a fulsome and richly layered Syrah with bold aromatics and a subtly building, seriously constructed palate. Match with roasted and slow-cooked game meat over the next 5-7 years. 100% Syrah hand-picked and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine on skins 16 days, and aged 15 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 85 cases made. 18.0+/20 Dec 2013 RRP $25.00
