Zephyr 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer

11-Jan-2017
Zephyr is the brand of Glover Family Vineyards, the wine venture of Owen and Wendy Glover who established their vineyards in the Dillons Point sub-region in 1985. The vineyards were planted in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, the Glovers adding Gewurztraminer in 1991, and more recently Pinot Gris. The family introduced the ‘Zephyr’ label with wines from 2007, based on the yield from their 30 ha of estate vineyards. Their sons Ben and Jack, who are prominent New Zealand wine industry personnel have had input in the growing and winemaking, and the wines have received critical acclaim. Elder son Ben left his position as Accolade Group Winemaker at the end of last year to devote his full-time energies to the Zephyr Wines operation. Here, I review the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. As can be expected, the fruit and vineyard are the features emphasised by Ben’s winemaking, and subtle sophistication is employed to enhance these aspects. www.zephyrwine.com
