Whitehaven 2012 and 2011 Releases

19-Sep-2012
Established in 1994 by Greg and Sue White, Whitehaven Wines has become one of the more significant producers of Sauvignon Blanc with important penetration in the U.S. market. This is through the distribution of giant Gallo wine company who has a 25% shareholding in the company. Whitehaven has seen spectacular growth, with a new 5.000 tonne capacity winery being built in 2004, and a production of around 200,000 cases of wine annually. Whitehaven draws from over 35 ha of own vineyards as well as contingent of contract growers, and the consistency of quality of the Whitehaven wines is by way of utilising fruit across sub-regions. Sue White is the managing director, following the passing of her husband in 2007. Winemaker is Sam Smail, with Whitehaven since 2000, assisted by Diana Katardzhieva and Rowan Langdon, and viticulturist is Sioban Harnett. I review a selection of new release wines from the 2012 and 2011 vintages including two flagship ‘Greg' wines. www.whitehaven.co.nz
