West Brook White Wine Releases

09-Nov-2015
The Ivicevich family has a winemaking history that stretches back generations to their family home in Croatia. Nowadays, Anthony and Susan Ivicevich, operate a modern winery and vineyard on Ararimu Road at Waimauku, north-west Auckland, having moved there in 2000 from Henderson. Their vineyard measures approx. 4 ha, and is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Malbec. The majority of fruit that makes up West Brook’s production however, comes primarily from Charles Wiffen’s vineyards in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. The Ivicevich and Wiffen families have had a long-standing arrangement where grape supply for West Brook is exchanged in return for contract winemaking for Charles Wiffen.

This has provided fruitful results with considerable show success, indicating the quality of the fruit and the excellence of the winemaking. With a capacity of 500 tonnes, much of the output is in contract work, and again, many of the other contract wines made here have gone on to win top awards. Anthony and Susan’s son Linton is part of the winemaking team as is James Rowan, with West Brook since 2004. James, as a long serving wine judge, offers considerable experience and perspectives to the quality and styles of the West Brook wines. West Brook flies a little under the radar, due to the humility of the Ivicevich family, but this is part of the charm that captures loyal clientele. Here, I review a selection of current white wine releases. www.westbrook.co.nz
