Waitapu Estate is the Northland wine venture of Eric and Sandra Shackleton who have established 4.85 ha of vines after purchasing land for a lifestyle block at Ahipara, near Kaitaia in 2000. The main varieties are Syrah and Pinotage, but also have Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Sangiovese. The three tiers are the affordable ‘Puriri Ridge’, the estate ‘Reef Point’, and limited release ‘Intrepid’ wines. Eric, Sandra and their family tend the vineyard, and the wines are made at Okahu Estate. www.waitapuestate.co.nz
