Waitapu Estate Northland 2015 Syrah

04-Nov-2016
Eric and Sandra Shackleton established Waitapu Estate in 2000 when they purchased a lifestyle block on Masters Access Road at Ahipara, near Kaitaia and planted vines. They have 2.5 ha of vines, and after trialling have Syrah and Pinotage as the main varieties, supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Sangiovese. The Shackletons make a range of tiers, from those with popular appeal to visitors to the region, to more sophisticated bottlings aimed at the enthusiast. The Shackleton family tend the vineyard personally, and have their wines made at the Karikari Estate facility. Here, I review the ‘Reef View’ 2015 Syrah. www.waitapuestate.co.nz
