From humble beginnings, Wairau River has grown to be one of Marlborough’s largest family owned winegrowing businesses. Phil and Chris Rose were pioneers in the region establishing vines in 1978. Much of the Wairau River grape resource dates back to 1992 plantings, giving the company mature vines and vineyards. The company now has 9 vineyards totalling around 285 ha. The second generation and extended family now tend the vineyards and make the high quality wines, which are classical in varietal and regional expression. Here, I review the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir Rosé, plus 2015 Pinot Noir, all in the ‘Estate’ tier. www.wairauriverwines.com
