One of the quiet achievers of Marlborough, Wairau River Wines is part of the fabric of the region, founders Phil and Chris Rose establishing their vineyards in 1978. The company is one of the largest independent producers with over 200 ha of vines in 8 estate vineyards, and it remains family owned, the next generation and extended family firmly in place in the key roles of management, viticulture, winemaking, cellar door and restaurant. The ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ wines, made at their Rapaura Road winery are classical Marlborough expressions which deliver more than expected from their value pricing. Here, I review the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2013 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. www.wairauriverwines.com
