Phil and Chris Rose figure among the pioneers of grapegrowing in Marlborough, establishing their vineyards in 1978. Today, Wairau River Wines is one of Marlborough’s largest family owned winegrowing operations with estate vineyards totalling over 200 ha, run by the extended Rose family. The majority of the vines date back to planting in 1992, providing Wairau River with enviable aged resource. Phil and Hamish Rose are responsible for the viticulture, and son Sam is the winemaker, working from the winery in Rapaura Road. An ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ range of wines are made. The Wairau River Wines cellar door and restaurant on the corner of Rapaura Road and S.H.6 is a popular destination which I can personally vouch for. Here, I review a selection of the 2013 and 2012 ‘Estate’ wines. www.wairauriverwines.com
