Waimea Estates 2016 and 2015 Releases

12-Dec-2016

Originally orchardists, the Bolitho family of Nelson diversified into grapegrowing in 1993 to produce their first wines in 1997. Waimea Estate is now one of the region’s largest wine producers with over 140 ha of vineyards on the Waimea Plains. The Waimea Estate wines are extremely successful on the domestic and international show circuit consistently winning top awards, testifying to the quality of the fruit. Ben Bolitho, son of founders Trevor and Robyn, now heads the company and has responsible for the viticulture since 2005. Winemaker Trudy Sheild, with the company since 2004, has shown a particularly deft touch in working with the innovative varieties as well as producing the classical varietal wines. Trudy has just stepped down for a break from the industry, and Hamish Kempthorne, formerly from Giesen, has now taken over the winemaker role.

Here, I review a selection of the latest and current releases from the challenging 2016 vintage which was rain-affected, and the low yielding 2015 vintage which produced intensely flavoured fruit. As can be expected from the meticulous viticulture and winemaking, high quality wines have resulted. The Waimea Estates team are very aware of the styles of wine preferred by the different markets, and this plays a part in the winemaking. www.waimeaestates.co.nz
