Waimea Estate and Spinyback 2014 and 2013 Releases

Since their beginnings in 1993, the Bolitho family of Waimea Estate have established themselves as one of the significant and serious winegrowers in the Nelson region. They’ve become the stalwarts of the Waimea Plains and express the character of the sub-region clearly with the recognised varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Wine competition success is no stranger to the ‘Waimea Estate’ and secondary ‘Spinyback’ labels with the core varieties, showing the excellent fruit that Ben Bolitho provides from the 140 ha of vineyards, and the skills of winemaker Trudy Sheild. Interestingly enough, the aromatic varieties of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer shine, and many consider Waimea Estate an aromatics specialist, although Viognier and Chardonnay are top award winners too. Recently, Waimea Estate has begun to make its mark on the wine scene with releases of emerging varieties, such as Gruner Veltliner and Sauvignon Gris. You could say that Waimea Estates is the consummate all-rounder!

Here, I review a selection of new 2014 and 2013 releases under the Waimea and Spinyback tiers, demonstrating the innovative approach prowess of the team. My impression of all the 2014 wines is they all possess fine textures, soft acidity and smooth phenolic mouthfeel. Winemaker Trudy Sheild has no doubt put in a great deal of work in seeking greater refinement. www.waimeaestates.co.nz
