Vintners N.Z. – A European Selection
In these tight economic times, the pressure to succumb to dumbing down the quality or reducing the size of one's portfolio is immense. Companies that maintain their standards and range are clever enough to see the long-term goal as the best driver for success. As a wine distribution company, Vintners N.Z. have maintained their strong New Zealand winery suppliers as well as an excellent range of imported agencies. Here is a small sampling of their European wines.
FEATURED WINES IN THIS REVIEW
La Vieille Ferme Cotes du Ventoux 2010Grenache from France - RhoneReview Date : 25-Jun-2011Bright, even, ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full, softly expressed nose of bright and jammy raspberry fruit with red florals and confectionary, very primary, but with a restraint. A fruity, juicy wine with good body and warmth at 13.5% alc., the raspberry flavours have an earth and cassis note and are upfront, mouthfilling and attractively lifted. The wine is one of low extraction and supple, soft textures, and soft acidity. A blend of approx. 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan and 15% Cinsault, from vineyards on the southern slopes of Mont Ventoux in the southern Rhone. A little shy at present, this will blossom. Drink over the next 2-4 years with antipasto, cold meats and pasta. 16.5-/20 Jun 2011 RRP $23.95
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Campo de Borja 2009Grenache from SpainReview Date : 25-Jun-2011A blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bodegas Borsao, a co-operative drawing fruit from over 1000 ha. Bright, even, dark ruby-red in colour, this has a fresh, fruit-driven nose of dark red berry fruits with notes of herbs, tar, earth and resin. This is medium full-bodied at 13.5% alc., with bright, uncomplicated and heady flavours of juicy raspberries and boysenberries with fresh herbs. Fresh, crisp and slippery acidity with modest tannin extraction result in a fruity, supple and very approachable wine to drink over the next 3-5 years with pizza, pasta and barbecued meats. 16.0+/20 Jun 2011 RRP $20.95
