Vinoptima ‘Reserve’ Gewurztraminer 2004

Nick Nobilo celebrated his 54th vintage in 2014, and in doing so can recall the very beginnings of the modern New Zealand wine industry. With a family history of winemaking stretching back over 300 years and his own experience of his family-owned business become a global entity, Nick has learned the value of his craft and skills. Setting up Vinoptima in 2000 and releasing his first release, the 2003 ‘Reserve’ Gewurztraminer, he made the bold move of pricing his wine in line with the top wines of Alsace. Nick was confident in the quality of the wine, and also believed that his wine would keep well and develop over the course of a decade and more, beyond that capable and expected for most other Gewurztraminers made in New Zealand. In September/October this year, Nick will release some of his library stock of the 2004 vintage, with a decade of bottle age to show how well the wine has kept. At the time of release, he thought the wine would evolve well to 2015 plus. Here is my review of the wine.
