Villa Maria Cellar Selection Gisborne Albarino 2015

01-Apr-2016
The Albarino variety, native to north-west Spain and to Portugal, haS found a home in New Zealand, where it is seen as a promising innovative variety. Many growers, producers and critics consider there is more potential in Albarino than Arneis or Gruner Veltliner due to its positive fruit expression and depth of character. The aromas and flavours are in the floral, citrus and white stonefruit spectrum and are reminiscent of Riesling. Similarly, the wines have pronounced acidity, requiring full ripeness and careful balance in vinification. Of the 30 ha grown in New Zealand, there are 10 ha in Gisborne. I recently tasted a selection of seven wines sent by the Gisborne Albarino Group (click here to see my report), of which the Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ 2015 was included. Here, I review the wine again, tasted on its own. www.villamaria.co.nz
