Villa Maria Arneis, Viognier and Verdelho Emerging Whites

Villa Maria has an unmatched track record at wine competitions. With each variety, the company’s winemakers and viticulturists have adapted the fruit to the regions so successfully that the Villa Maria wines can be seen as benchmarkers and models for this country’s industry. Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, the Bordeaux varieties, and Sauvignon Blanc have all come under the programme of making exceptional examples. Villa Maria started their serious Pinot Noir development with the 1990 vintage in Marlborough and within a decade had created a strong range of single vineyard and ‘Reserve’’ wines that regularly take out the top places in judgings. The other classics, such as Riesling and Syrah have proven to be equally as successful. Is there any reason to doubt that Villa Maria will take the emerging varieties of Viognier, Verdelho and Arneis to the same level? I think not. Here are my reviews of a selection of Villa Maria’s emerging varieties.

  • Villa Maria ‘Private Bin’ East Coast Arneis 2013
  • Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Arneis 2013
  • Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Viognier 2014
