Vidal ‘Legacy’ 2015 Chardonnay, and 2014 Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon

Under the guidance of winemaker Hugh Crichton and with the full support of the parent Villa Maria Estates group, Vidal of Hawke’s Bay has become one of the top producers of Hawke’s Bay wine. The portfolio of ‘Reserve’ and ‘Estate’ wines includes wines from other districts, but the flagship ‘Legacy’ wines showcase the home Hawke’s Bay region. Hugh’s winemaking style is thoroughly contemporary, and the Chardonnay wines consistently show the elegant, intense gunflinty and minerally complex characters. The Bordeaux-varietal reds and Syrahs are bold and ripe, and not ashamed of complementary oaking which endows them with great richness and layers of flavour. I have a feeling Hugh will be aiming for greater finesse and elegance with future wines.

Vidal and Hawke’s Bay in general have basked in the glory of some sensational vintages of late. 2013 is regarded by Hugh, the Vidal team and Villa Maria as one of the greatest years yet in The Bay. However, the wines from 2014 are beginning to be seen as challenging the 2013s. And 2015 is a wonderful vintage too, especially for Chardonnay. The comparisons are now being made, but as Hugh says, "time will tell”. Here are my reviews of the Vidal ‘Legacy’ 2015 Chardonnay, and 2014 Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the start of my comparison of these great vintages for Vidal. They show, I believe, Hugh Crichton’s move in the direction of greater refinement. The wines will be released in August.
