Vidal 2015 and 2014 ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ Releases

20-May-2016
Vidal Estate has a history stretching back to 1905 when it was established by Anthony Joseph Vidal who emigrated from Spain in 1888 to work for his uncle Joseph Soler, a pioneering winemaker. Under the ownership of the Villa Maria Estates group, Vidal Estate has grown to become its own identity, making distinctive and very high quality wines. With the stewardship of Hugh Crichton, winemaker since 2006, it can be argued that the wines have never been better. The wine show record for the wines across the board and over the different tiers has been impeccable, and certainly the attributes in the very top ‘Legacy’ wines can be seen in the ‘Reserve’ and ‘Estate’ wines to varying degrees. My tastings of the 2013 ‘Reserve’ Bordeaux-blend and Syrah yielded 5-star wines (click here to see he report). Here, I review the 2015 Chardonnay and 2014 Merlot/Cabernet from the ‘Estate’ range, plus the 2015 Chardonnay, and 2014 Merlot/Cabernet and Syrah from the ‘Reserve’ range. www.vidal.co.nz
