One of the pioneers of the Margaret River wine industry, Vasse Felix has had an illustrious history since its establishment in 1967. The company has been owned by the Holmes a Court family since 1987, and Virginia Wilcock has been chief winemaker since 2008. Bart Molony is the chief viticulturist. The company has four vineyards totalling 260 ha, with some of the oldest vines in the region. The wines are modern and classical expressions of the region, and the top ‘Heytsbury’ bottlings can be counted among the great wines of Western Australia, and Australia in general. The accessible ‘Filius’ range captures the Margaret River personality, and delivers it at an accessible price. Here, I review the 2014 ‘Filius’ Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Cabernet Merlot reviewed last year in March. The latter wine has developed greater richness and character since then. www.vassefelix.com.au
