Valli Vineyards 2014 Otago Pinot Noirs

My ‘Feature Reviews’ of Valli Vineyards Otago Pinot Noirs since the 2010 vintage have shown them to be among the best and most consistent expressions of that variety I’ve tasted, such that Grant Taylor’s Valli Vineyards label has been considered yearly for my ‘Winery of the Year’ award. Grant has vinified some of the most awarded Central Otago Pinot Noir wines, and with over 20 years’ experience making wine in Central Otago, and producing his own wine from the 1998 vintage, he demonstrates an unequalled understanding of the soils and climates of the various sub-regions of Otago, and the unmatched ability in working with the fruit to make wines that represent where they come from. Grant’s Valli Vineyard Pinot Noirs show Gibbston, Bannockburn, Waitaki Valley and Bendigo sub-regionality as no other label does.

With the 2014 vintage, Grant Taylor has entered into a collaboration with Ted Lemon, Claire Mulholland and Marquis Sauvage of Burn Cottage to make Pinot Noir wines from each other’s vineyards. Grant has made a Valli ‘Burn Cottage Vineyard’ Lowburn Pinot Noir, and the Burn Cottage team have made a ‘Valli Vineyard’ Gibbston Pinot Noir. This is a step beyond expressing sub-regionality and an exploration into the expression of terroir. I will have the opportunity of reviewing the Burn Cottage ‘Valli Vineyard’ wine soon. It will be fascinating to see the interplay of site and winemaker signature. Will both Grant Taylor and the Burn Cottage team take this further? Here, I review the 2014 Valli Vineyards Otago Pinot Noirs, including the ‘Burn Cottage Vineyard’ bottling.
