Brendan Seal makes small lots of one-off Central Otago wine, predominantly working with Pinot Noir. His modus operandi is to source small parcels of fruit from different sub-regions and make wine that expresses the site as well as variety. He tries different vinification techniques with each wine, so his bottlings are truly unique. Having operated out of the Packspur winery in Lowburn for a number of years, he will be shifting his base to Dunedin, where he will be running his new URBN VINO urban winery. This is a project that began in 2016, where he transported Central Otago Pinot Noir fruit to Dunedin to be vinified in a heritage building site, then pressed to barrel, which is taken back to Central Otago for maturation and bottling. Recently he released the Urban Vino Dunedin Pinot Noir 2016 made by this process, to help raise funds for continuing the development (click here to see my review). A ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir 2016 has now come available. I review that wine here. www.urbnvino.nz
