Two Paddocks 2013 Riesling and 2012 Pinot Noir

12-Sep-2014
The ‘Two Paddocks’ winegrowing venture of actor Sam Neill has grown from the original 2 ha vineyard in Gibbston planted in 1993 to a brand that represents the best of Central Otago. Riesling and Pinot Noir, the vignoble’s best varieties remain the focus for Two Paddocks, though the everyday ‘Picnic’ tier has introduced other varieties. The major news item for Two Paddocks was the purchase of the 5.6 ha ‘Desert Heart’ vineyard at the end of Felton Road in Bannockburn, now giving Sam vineyard holdings in Bannockburn, Gibbston and Alexandra. This will enable the production of four single vineyard wines as well as greater blending opportunities for the estate Two Paddocks Pinot Noir. Also anticipated is the certification of all four vineyards to organic status in 2015. This review is of the latest release 2013 Riesling and estate 2012 Pinot Noir, both wines produced from fruit solely from Alexandra, where Sam Neill’s Riesling vines are planted, and as in 2012, a frost devastated the Gibbston Pinot Noir fruit. www.twopaddocks.com
