Twelfth Night Central Otago Riesling 2015, and 2014 and 2013 Pinot Noirs

Twelfth Night is the brand name for the Central Otago wines of Vela Wines, a company set up in 2011 by husband and wife Arie and Beth Ann Dahan and business partner Max Risman who are based in Boston MA, in the U.S.A. Captivated by the people and the country, they launched Vela Wines producing Pinot Noir from Central Otago and Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough to export to the U.S.A. Their intention is to grow the range with partnerships with other wineries. The name ‘Twelfth Night’ refers to the night of their visit to New Zealand when they were astounded by the beauty of the sky.

Vela Wines owns a 25 ha vineyard in Locharburn in the Pisa district, dedicated to Pinot Noir, the vines planted in 2001 and 2002 to various clones including 5, 6, 667, 777, 115 and 10/5. There are eight distinct blocks, named after different states or regions of the U.S.A. Prior to the production of the ‘Twelfth Night’ wines, the fruit was old on a contract basis. The operation has been run by Antony Worch, best known as winemaker at Alexandra Vintners, since 2014, and they have Julien Alexandre and Miriam Park tend the vineyards. At present the wine are available only in the U.S.A., but the owners are considering expanding their markets. Here, I review the 2015 Riesling, and 2014 and 2013 Pinot Noirs.
