TW Gisborne Pinot Gris 2013

23-Mar-2016
TW Wines is the collaboration between two very experienced Gisborne grapegrowers Paul Tietjen and Geordie Witters who began their wine brand venture in 1998, with wines made from fruit from their vineyards, the first release being a ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay, then an ‘Estate’ unoaked Chardonnay, the ‘Maukauri’ Malbec/Merlot blend and the others including Carmenere and Verdelho by 2010. The vineyards are sited on the 5 km strip from Ormond to Hexton called ‘The Golden Slope’ by locals as it is reminiscent of Burgundy’s Cote d’Or, and are 2.5 km apart. The ‘Witters’ vineyard is 15 ha in size and was established in the mid-1970s and has Chardonnay, Viognier and Merlot. The ‘Tietjen’ vineyard is 30 ha in size and was established in the mid-1980s, and has Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Verdelho, Albarino, Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Carmenere. The wines are made by Anita Ewart-Croy at the facilities of the Tairawhiti EIT Polytechnic where the TW Wines barrel room is situated, Solander Cellars and GisVin. Here, I review the 2013 Pinot Gris, made KEW by Anita. www.twwines.co.nz
