The ‘Torea’ brand began as a second label for Fairhall Downs when under the Small family ownership. When Fairhall Downs was sold to the Bray and Hill families in 2014, the ‘Torea’ brand was acquired by the Jakicevich family, best known for their Glengarry retail and Hancocks distribution wine companies. They have contracted Kim Crawford to continue to make classical, value wines, predominantly from Marlborough fruit. ‘Torea’ is the Maori name for the threatened Variable Oystercatcher native bird. Here, I review the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, and 2013 Chardonnay. www.toreawines.co.nz
