Tora Bay ‘Tora Rock Sauvignon Blanc 2014 and Cabernet/Merlot 2013

Tora Bay is the wine venture of Wellington-based financier Martin Bonifant who has 33 ha of Sauvignon Blanc vines on the Lake Ferry Road south of the Martinborough village. The fruit is transported to the ‘Links’ winery in Hawke’s Bay where industry veteran Tony Prichard makes the wine. Martin has a very successful export programme with the majority of his wine going to the U.S.A. He attributes the growth of the brand to the base premises of economy of scale and targeting the market with specific wines at the appropriate price points.

To expand the Tora Bay brand, Martin has introduced a red wine, a Cabernet/Merlot blend sourced from South Australian fruit. His industry contacts in Adelaide have provided him with the base wine components which are then fine-tuned with Tony Prichard’s input. The wine is reported to be a successful addition to the Tora Bay portfolio, and at the nominated retail price offers real value.
