Tony Bish ‘Fat n Sassy’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2015

24-May-2016
Tony Bish, chief winemaker at Sacred Hill Wines, introduced his own label two years ago with his ‘Fat n Sassy’ Chardonnay from the 2013 vintage. Having made some of this country’s finest examples of that variety, he knew the name of his wine would instantly strike an accord with a high proportion of Chardonnay drinkers. And indeed the name of the wine has been a major part of the success of the wine. In today’s world of modern, high quality Chardonnay, elegance is everything, and Tony’s wine veered, not erred, on the side of finesse, resulting in a number of his followers saying the wine was not ‘Fat n Sassy’ enough. Tony made the 2014 vintage "fatter, to meet both consumer expectation and palate preference at this price point” and Tony reports this was the right move. With this 2015 release, has Tony moved a little further again towards "fatter”? I offer my review of the wine here. I believe Tony has not made any further move to making a "fatter” wine at this time, thus retaining the essential element of finesse. www.tonybishwine.co.nz
