Tony Bish 2015 ‘Summertime’ and 2014 ‘Fat n Sassy’ Chardonnays

Tony Bish, better known as chief winemaker at Sacred Hill, launched his own label last year with the 2013 ‘Fat n Sassy’ Chardonnay. It was the inaugural wine in a Chardonnay-only project he runs with his wife Karryn and photographer fried Richard Brimer. The wine was clearly aimed at the enthusiastic end of the market, but made incorporating Tony’s style of elegance. Tony says the feedback from consumer and trade is to make it more ‘Fat n Sassy’! He has taken steps to do so, but adds the rider "one man’s fat is another man’s flabby”.

With 2015, Tony has released his next vintage of ‘Fat n Sassy’ as well as introducing a ‘Summertime’ Chardonnay from Gisborne fruit. These are his two ‘café’ of ‘lifestyle’ wines. Also disclosed are two far more sophisticated and serious Chardonnays due for release next year. One, from Te Awanga fruit vinified in a trendy concrete egg, and already showing "incredible texture” will be on the market next May/June and will have a RRP of $39.95. Even more premium is an old Mendoza vine Chardonnay from Denis Gunn’s ‘Skeetfield’ vineyard aged in exotic oak, "looking truly remarkable” scheduled for August release at a likely RRP of $59.95. It appears Tony’s reputation as one of this country’s best and most experienced Chardonnay makers will be growing even more. Here, I review the new release 2015 ‘Summertime’ and 2014 ‘Fat n Sassy’ Chardonnays.
