This year has seen the emergence of Ant Mackenzie as a significant player in the Hawke’s Bay wine scene. Having consultancy roles with a number of high profile producers including Te Awa, Dry River and Villa Maria,, as well as Petane Station and Askerne, Ant and his wife Fiona have introduced the ‘Tono’ Spanish-inspired range of wines, the technique wines under the ‘Theory & Practice’ brand, and the site-expressive ‘Craft Farm’ wines to the market place with a degree of vigour. I’ve been impressed with the wines, taking my time to understand the philosophies behind them, and the wines are now quickly gaining in popular acceptance. Here, I review the 2016 Tono Rosado and Theory & Practice Pinot Gris, the former wine now on its third vintage release, and the latter a new addition to the portfolio. www.antswines.co.nz
