Tohu Marlborough and Aronui Nelson 2016 and 2015 Releases

Under the Kono Beverages umbrella, the distinctions between the ‘Tohu’ and ‘Aronui’ brands have become clearer with each vintage. The ‘Tohu’ wine range is normally based on Marlborough fruit grown in the company’s Awatere and Waihopi sites, and somewhat more classical in style, representing the best known and best-performing varieties there. There have been many particularly high quality ‘Reserve’ bottlings developed over time. The newer ‘Aronui’ label represents Nelson grown fruited wines, predominantly from the company’s ‘Whenua Matua’, supplemented with contracted fruit. The Nelson wines encompass aromatic and some of the new and innovative varieties being trialled in the country, the Nelson region being prominent with them. All of the wines are made at the company’s Awatere Valley winery by the experienced Bruce Taylor, who has had many of his wines awarded well- at wine shows. Here, I review a selection of Tohu Marlborough and Aronui Nelson wines from the 2016 and 2015 vintages.
