Thomas Waiheke Island 2014 Chardonnay and 2013 Cabernet Franc Merlot

23-Feb-2016
The Thomas Family who own Batch Winery on Waiheke Island have introduced the ‘Thomas’ and ‘Thomas Legacy’ labels to represent their Waiheke Island wines. The family began their wine venture with the purchase of an established vineyard which they have rejuvenated. Based on Carsons Road, they produce small and specific batches of wines, in the style of Northern Rhone Syrah, Burgundian Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Bordeaux-styled wines, and, Italian method Blanc de Blanc sparkling wines. They recently introduced an accessible range under the ‘Thomas’s Bach’ brand, and the new ‘Thomas’ and ‘Thomas Legacy’ brands show the more serious and sophisticated side of their operation. The wines are made on-site by Daniel Struckman. Here, I review the new ‘Thomas’ 2014 Chardonnay and 2013 Cabernet Franc/Merlot, made from contracted Waiheke Island fruit. The wines are elegant, refined and very contemporary in style. www.batchwinery.com
