The Writer’s Block Late Harvest Gewurztraminer 2013

There’s an intuitive feel that winemakers have for their craft, much of the decisions based on knowing the vineyards from where the fruit for their wines are sourced, and importantly seeing how the vines and the fruit has responded to the growing season. Some winemakers take great heed and credence in the analyses and figures from testing the grapes, must and wine, and may put their total trust them. Others are happier to go with the feel and the flow. In making this Late Harvest Gewurztraminer, Brendan Seal of the Packspur Wine Studio has gone with the latter. Seeing a tiny, but outstanding parcel of fruit in the Lowburn area, and tasting the flavours, he’s made a wine. The figures don’t stack up if you’re a technician, as the pH is a little high, and the TA (acidity) is incredibly low, but the wine is delicious. The numbers say the wine will be flabby and fall over quickly, but as it’s so appealing, I can’t see why anyone would want to keep it.
