The Supernatural and Green Glow 2014

The Supernatural Wine Co. is the Hawke’s Bay wine venture that has evolved from ‘Millar Road’ and ‘And Co.’. The company is owned by Gregory Collinge who established in 2004 the Millar Road luxury accommodation which overlooks the Supernatural Wine Co. vineyard. Gabrielle Simmers was the founder of the venture in 2009, which started as ‘And Co.’, and she remains as consultant winemaker. Hayden Penny has been working with the project since 2013, and has become full-time viticulturist and winemaker from this year. Hayden is a specialist in organic and natural winegrowing methods to express terroir, and came recently from William Murdoch Wines.

The aim of the company is to produce naturally vinified wines, and organic and biodynamic viticulture is a key philosophy. The Supernatural vineyard achieved BioGro organic certification in March this year. Gabrielle, initially inspired by the minerally Sauvignon Blanc wines of the Loire employed techniques such as indigenous yeasts and extended lees contact to make the first wines. Skin-fermentation and the move towards fully natural, minimal intervention and orange styles are now part of the evolution, thus the company name ‘The Supernatural’ is fully apt. Here, I review the new 2014 ‘The Supernatural’ and ‘Green Glow’ Sauvignon Blanc wines.
