The Ham family grow and make archetype Bridge Pa wines from their 20 hectares of vineyards on Maraekakaho Road just outside of Hastings. The top-flight ‘AD’ wines are serious, complex and ageworthy, whereas the premium ‘Alpha Domus’ range are classical and well-balance. Their range under ‘The Pilot’ label is more accessible and highlights varietal character. I’ve found that ‘The Pilot’ wines are much more than simple, and can possess real interest with a degree complexity. Here, I review two 2015 vintage wines, a Chardonnay and a Late Harvest wine, these made by Barry Riwai, who arrived at his new position as Alpha Domus winemaker just before vintage. www.alphadomus.co.nz
