The Islander Kangaroo Island 2011 Wally White and The Red

The Islander is the brand of Jacques Lurton, renowned flying winemaker and scion of the famous Bordeaux Lurton family. Racking up vintages throughout the world, he eventually established The Islander Estate Vineyards on Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third-largest island just over 100 km south-west of Adelaide. Based on his global experience and French background, he established 11 ha of close-planted vines within the 300 ha farm. A cool-climate vineyard, it is planted to Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Malbec, Semillon, Viognier, Grenache and Shiraz, with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. The premier range consists of the ‘Estate’ wines with ‘Yakka Jack’ the flagship blend. The first white in this tier was the ‘Wally White’, a Semillon. The top wines are supported by ‘The Islander’ wines. The wines have received considerable critical acclaim at an early stage. Here, I review the ‘Wally White’ Semillon 2011 and ‘The Red’ 2011, wines from the premier and second tiers. The wines are imported by the Fine Wine Delivery Co.
