The Elder Pinot is the Martinborough winegrowing venture of Mike and Margaret Hanson, and Nigel and Bridgit Elder, based on 12.15 ha site on the Ruakokapatuna river terraces overlooking the Te Muna Valley. The vineyard set up by the Hansons is planted to 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Gris. Nigel Elder, a viticulturist with Martinborough Vineyard became familiar with the site and the quality of the fruit that the Hansons and Elders formed a partnership to release their own label with the 2010 vintage. The wines are made by Paul Mason of Martinborough Vineyard.

The nose is exuberant with aromas of ripe stonefruit, pear and apple, melded with ginger and honeysuckle, underlying a subtle lime flowers and labneh. Medium-bodied, dry to taste, there is a good core of flavours of apple and pear, along with citrus fruit, lime flowers, entwined with honey and five-spice. The purity of fruit, supported by lively acidity, flows with good energy along with crunchy stony mineral; leads to a refreshing, elegant linear finish. The mouthfeel has a fine layer of phenolic grip, contributed to the body; interweaved with supple, creamy lees detail. This is a detailed, dry Pinot Gris with exuberant fruit, balanced by lively acidity with mineral and creamy lees detail. Match with fried halloumi and chicken satay over the next 3-5 years. The nose is delicate and pretty with fragrances of red blossom, dark herbs, ripe red cherries, raspberries, interweaved with a light dusting of oak spices. Light bodied with power, flavours of red cherries, raspberries, entwined with blossoms, dark herbs and oak spices. The fruit is ripe and bright with balanced acidity. The mouthfeel is elegant and supple with a fine layer of powdery tannin. This is an elegant Pinot Noir from a cooler vintage, showing red fruit with delicate floral, balanced acidity on a fine dusty tannin structure. Match with game fowl over the next 5-6 years.
