Terroir Wines Martinborough 2011 ‘Stampede’ and BDX, and 2010 BDX

28-Feb-2017
Terroir Wines is the Martinborough boutique wine and lifestyle venture of Simon Groves and Amanda Ritchie who have a property on Dry River Road where they live, "farm sheep, cattle and chickens” planting grapes in 2015. Simon is a winemaker with varied and wide industry experience both in New Zealand and overseas, meeting Amanda in 2005, and both moving to Martinborough in 2007. Working in various industry roles, Simon also co-owned with Amanda the Martinborough Wine Centre which they ran for over 6 years. With three young children, Amanda looks after the property and works occasionally at the shop, while Simon is the winemaker at Redbank Estate on Te Muna Road, as well as making the Terroir Wines bottlings. Their philosophy is to source fruit from special sites to make their wines until their own vineyard comes into production. The earlier wines have been based on Bordeaux varietals, employing fruit from the former Benfield & Delamare vines, wines made in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. Wines were not made in 2012, due to insufficient fruit ripeness, and 2015 due to frost. A Pinot Noir from Redbank Estate fruit was made in 2016. Here, I review the 2011 ‘Stampede’ and BDX, and 2010 BDX. www.terroir-wines.co.nz
